You’ve booked your family photo session and now comes the moment when you think… “What are we going to wear?” This is the first question that most of my clients ask and I get it. Picking out outfits for your entire tribe can be daunting. Pants, dresses, jeans, sweaters, shoes… and of course, accessories!
Don’t worry. I am here to help. Here are some tips for planning your wardrobe so you look and feel fabulous!
- No matchy matchy.
We have all seen them. Those awkward family photos from the 80s where the whole family is wearing acid washed jeans and white t shirts. Resist the urge to dress in matching clothes. It is not natural! You wouldn’t all go out to dinner and a movie in matching clothes so steer away from that for your photo session. Instead, pick 2 colors that go well together and build from there. If you want to add a pattern, pick one family member where a patterned shirt or printed dress. Don’t go overboard. Too many patterns can be distracting.
- Avoid characters or large graphics on clothing.
We all love Hello Kitty, but it can really date your images and tends to look too relaxed and distracting. So put away the Nike tee shirt and pick out something a little more classic for your photos.
- Start planning right away!
I have created Pinterest boards for you to get inspiration from so start by browsing those after booking your session. Pinterest is an amazing resource! Just search for “family photo wardrobe ideas” and you will pull up loads of great inspiration. You don’t want to wait for the week of your session to decide on your clothing. It will just add unnecessary stress. We want this to be a super fun experience from start to finish!
- Coordinate with your home’s color scheme.
You are going to display these images on your walls so you want to choose clothing that will compliment your home design and color scheme.
- Layers and Textures.
Layers and textures add visual interest to your images. Cardigans, vests, scarves, jewelry, and belts all add a little something extra and if we want to peel them away for part of the session, we can! This will add variety to your images too!
- Step out of your box!
Do you love the look of a maxi dress but don’t wear them everyday, that’s ok! Make this a special event! Choose a look you absolutely love and something you feel beautiful in. I like the idea of planning mom’s outfit first and building from there. Sadly, we moms are always the hardest on ourselves so we want to be sure we pick something that makes us feel amazing!
- Don’t forget your feet.
I love heels. At 5 feet tall, I wear them a lot! But most of my locations involve fields, grass or the beach so super tall heels can be tricky. Let’s chat about our location and then decide upon shoes that will work best. Of course, we can always kick them off (and we often do!) For kids, try and avoid shoes that have lots of color that would distract from their outfits. An example would be athletic shoes with lots of color for boys. Try to keep the shoes color neutral or like I said, we can go barefoot!
- Strive for classic and timeless.
Think of your images as family heirlooms. These are something you are creating not only for your own joy, but for generations to come. Keeping it simple will help your images remain timeless.
Remember, I am here to help every step of the way! As your photographer, I want to help you style your session. Send me a list of colors you are thinking of using, pictures of clothes you have picked out from your closet or links to favorites online. We will plan this together and your images will be amazing. I promise!
If you are in the Skagit County area, here are a few links to some of my favorite local boutiques. I love the idea of supporting our local businesses and shopping small!
Have fun planning everyone! And Happy Shopping!
